The La Nina is getting weaker and it is expected that El Nino or warmer condition in the eastern Pacific might appear in 2009 as suggested by a famous climate predctor from Japan Prof. Toshio Yamagata. At this time the central Pacific is the coldest, tropic-wide. To the west of this cold anomaly, a boomerang pattern is formed with warm SST anomalies. As a result of those warm SST anomalies, we find anomalously heavy rain over those regions.

The tropical conditions give rise to drier conditions over several parts of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Western India. Parts of East Asia and southern parts of Japan are also drier than normal at this time. Most parts of Australia also suffered from drier autumn.
